Take the DPS Road Test in one of our cars but first:
- All students must hold a valid Texas driving permit and show proof of one qualifying lesson at our school.
- Ages 18 up to 24 must also complete the new required 6 hour driver’s ed course online or in a classroom to earn a learner’s permit.
- Age 16 or 17 must have a certificate of completion from a online school or classroom to qualify to take DPS written exam for driver’s permit.
- 16 thru 17 years of age must also possess a completed and signed DE-964 for required 14 hour in-car training from SmartChoice Driver School.
- New! Age 16 and 17 now must show proof of 20 additional hours behind the wheel driving, 10 day and 10 night (TEA 20 Hour Instruction/BTW Log).
- Complete at least one qualifying lesson behind the wheel with a SmartChoice Driver School Instructor
- Maintain lane positions and a safe speed consistently
- Accelerate and brake with control
- Control of steering turning corners
- Complete proper and safe lane changes
- Knowing when it is safe to go
If you were not trained at our school you can qualify by:
Demonstrating safe control behind-the-wheel in as little as 20 minutes; total lesson time for two or three students will be 90 minutes. Remaining time will be reserved for pick-up and drop-off of each student.Cost Per Student to Qualify:
- 3 student Buddy System…$19 each. 2 student Buddy System…$20 each 1 student…$45 for one hour minimum

Your online payment must be one day in advance of Road Test Date (important to bring online receipt). A check or exact amount in cash may be paid on the day of pick-up. (note: we do not carry change)
Please do not forget your payment, permit/photo, lenses, SSN Card, Teen VOE form, and appropriate clothing for outside, as time is a factor and we cannot go back for any items once on the road to the test site. A no show fee of $45.00 will be due for the rescheduled test.
Students must be ready for pick-up as early as 5:30 am on the day of the road test and must be prepared to return to school, work, or home as late as 11:30am.
* From time of pick-up and drop-off, total time averages 4 hours.
Student drivers must bring the following items to DPS Road Test:
Note: * We will not be able to return for any forgotten items if student is sharing test car.
1. Warm Jacket and gloves if winter time and rain jacket if rainy day, as we must wait outside. DPS will not cancel Road Test unless there is severe rain, fog, or icy road conditions.
2. Valid driver’s permit with photo.
3. Current VOE Form – Verification of enrollment in high school if you are under 18 years old.
4. Valid driver’s permit with valid green card photo ID or Pass Port if non U.S citizen.
5. Valid work VISA Photo ID, and proof of employment signed by employer, if temporary worker in the U.S.
6. $11 cash or check to pay DPS for processing new driver license photo.
7. Payment in the form of a check or exact amount in cash, or online receipt if paid by credit or bank card.
8. Do not forget your lenses if required.
